NUS (Social license of fossil fuel companies)
Name: NUS Divest-Invest
Category: Campaigning & advocacy
Project summary: One of the main aims of NUS' Divest-Invest campaign is to challenge the social license of fossil fuel companies. We would like to explore how successful it is in achieving this end.
Detailed summary: The burgeoning fossil fuel divestment movement in the UK has gained significant traction in our educational institutions over the past 3 years, boasting success after success, and inching us ever closer to a low-carbon existence. One of the main aims of the campaign is to challenge the social license of the companies it seeks divestment from, and it would be interesting to explore how successful it is in achieving this end.
This could be (but is open to however the student wishes to explore it!) a quantitative based research study into how perceptions change of these companies as a divestment campaign begins at an institution – we can help you with identifying where! It could start with a baseline survey of students not involved, but aware that the campaign is taking place and investigate how their perceptions evolve 6 months on. A particularly interesting group to survey might be students who study engineering or geology as they are often sought by the fossil fuel industry for their transferable skills.
