Short summary: Hi there!
My name is Fenella Walsh and I am currently undertaking my Postgraduate degree in Sustainable Food and Natural Resources at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth. Throughout the degree I have become increasingly interested in how to localise our food system, bringing the production line closer to cities in order to reduce food miles and allow communities to engage with the food they consume.
As a result, this is the focus for my dissertation.
Detailed summary: My dissertation area of focus is mainly on urban food production and how to bring production closer to urban areas in order to reduce food miles and effect on the climate from transporting food globally. Hopefully I can look into how to scale up local and community growing, whilst providing fresh, nutritious food to local communities. I am particularly interested in vertical farming methods, hydroponics and aquaponics, and their feasibility in urban centres. I am based in Liverpool but would be interested in researching anywhere in the UK.
