Podcast: The future we choose – UCU Green New Deal

This is an exciting opportunity to raise awareness and contribute to the communications of what a green transition can look for universities and colleges. It builds on the UCU Green New Deal, which is a framework for staff in universities and colleges to use for negotiating with their employers to ensure our education institutions are making a green transition, and bringing the workforce and students with them. You will be supported by staff working on environment and sustainability at UCU to identify the framing for the podcast episodes and key individuals to interview.

We are seeking someone who is a confident communicator and able to facilitate an informative and inspiring interview to be included on UCUs new podcast series.

It is likely interviews will take place online, so recordings will be through the online platforms used for the interviews (e.g. zoom). Ideally you will have some experience or an interest in editing audio materials to streamline the interviews.

How the climate crisis is impacting educators and teachers

UCU is committed to engaging members with calling on their employers to take action on climate change. UCU recognises that climate change is a justice issue and if we are to address the climate crisis, we need to do this with justice as a central pillar. With this, is the need for a Just Transition for workers to a green economy.

This project/ opportunity aims to draw together case studies and examples of where teachers/educators globally are already being impacted by the consequences of the climate crisis. It aims to raise awareness across the trade union movement of how the climate crisis is an issue effecting workers and workers' rights, therefore highlighting the fact that the climate crisis is a trade union issue. By compiling case studies of examples exemplifying this, it is hoped that engagement with calling on employers to take action in addressing the climate crisis will increase and the importance of this issue will become all the more apparent to trade union members.

It may be that this is carried out by one student, or a small group of students working together.

UCU will provide leads for contacts to reach out for identifying case studies. You will also be supported with the framing for the video/ short film.

It is possible for students to divide the tasks for this project up, therefore you may have skills for video editing/ creation, whilst someone else may be able to take a lead on gathering the case studies.

Videographer for ‘Down the Lens’

'Down the Lens' is an online drama session for children and adults with learning difficulties and additional complex needs. I currently upload the footage onto Imovie and attempt to edit the videos myself - adding subtitles and limited effects which the participants ask for. However, the quality is not that good. I would really like to create a showreel for each participant that showcases the amazing work they have created over the past 18 months. I would like the editing to look professional and be of a standard that I can upload onto my website, which is currently been made.

I have recently received funding from Unltd, so this opportunity will be paid.

If the collaboration is successful, then the offer the individual to work alongside me more frequently will be available.

Green Impact Auditors for the Highland Council

Green Impact

Green Impact is an environmental accreditation programme with an awards element, designed to encourage, support and celebrate organisations and educational institutions in embedding sustainability in all areas of their work. Interested staff and students volunteer to participate in the programme and receive a toolkit outlining actions they can take to progress sustainable practice.

Depending on the number of environmental actions teams carry out, they can achieve either: a working towards accreditation, Bronze, Silver or Gold award. All teams participating in Green Impact will need an audit to verify their level of achievement… and this is where you come in!

Auditing

We are looking for volunteer auditors support the teams and schools in the Highland Council area in reflecting and taking stock of their first year on the programme. Each volunteer auditor will be fully trained on the criteria and what they need to do in order to audit through a half-day of training. In pairs auditors will then complete one or more audit. An audit should take around an hour to complete depending on the size of the team.

What skills do I need?

No technical knowledge is needed! Full training will be provided. All you need is an interest in environmental issues and sustainability.

Neuro diversity in police custody

Working in partnership with Bromley Autism partnership , Brixton ARCS and Metropolitan police Detention (Met Det) safeguarding hub are developing a multi strand approach to adjusting the way custody staff interact with some sections of the Neuro diverse community are dealt with in the custody environment and utilising their lived experience to identify area where adjustments can be facilitated and adopted.

This includes providing custody staff with bespoke Neuro diversity awareness and adjustment training and utilising people with a range of neuro diverse conditions scrutinizing and assisting in shaping the content of the training and conducting site visits to four trial sites Bromley, Croydon, Brixton and Walworth, these would include individuals with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and if possible Touretts syndrome before then providing a considered suggestion of areas of concern aiming specifically suggestions as to how we could amend processes or physical factors etc.

We are looking for an enthusiastic student in social sciences to formulate a study report which would support us to amend areas of concerns where appropriate, these adjustments could then be rolled out across the MET DET estate. The role is flexible and varied in terms of time commitment and can be delivered over a period of time. It would involve working with a cohort of volunteers and staff.

The student will have to coordinate with the lead contact to discuss research methods and how the project can be delivered whilst considering protection requirements for everyone involved.
